How to use our free social media character counter
Type or paste your caption into the box. The character and word counts update as you type — there's no button to press.
Check the platform cards underneath. Each one shows that platform's caption limit, from X (280) to Facebook (63,206), with a Fits badge or an exact “Over by” number.
If a card says “Over by”, cut that many characters, or write a shorter version just for that platform and keep the full one where there's room.
Once every platform you plan to post on says Fits, copy your text from the box and post it.
Why character limits matter for social media growth
A caption that runs too long doesn't always fail loudly. Some apps won't let you post it at all, and a scheduling tool may simply trim the end — often the call to action or the link. Checking the count before you post beats fixing it afterwards.
The limits also vary more than most people expect: Bluesky allows 300 characters, Threads 500, Pinterest 800, LinkedIn 3,000 and a YouTube description 5,000. One caption rarely fits everywhere as written. Draft the full version first, then use the counter to see which platforms need a shorter cut. A tighter caption is often easier to read on a phone anyway, so trimming is rarely a loss.
Frequently asked questions
What are the caption limits for each platform?
The Instagram character limit is 2,200, and TikTok's is 2,200 too. X allows 280, Threads 500, Bluesky 300, Pinterest 800, LinkedIn 3,000, YouTube descriptions 5,000 and Facebook 63,206. The counter checks all nine at once, so you don't have to remember them.
Is this character counter free?
Yes — free, with no sign-up. The counting happens in your browser, so the text you type stays on your device and isn't sent to us.
How are emojis counted?
The way you see them: one emoji is one character, even combined ones like flags or a family emoji. Some platforms count differently behind the scenes — X, for example, counts most emojis as two characters — so leave a little room when you're close to a tight limit.
Never trim a caption by hand again.
Postlefy writes every caption to fit each platform's limit automatically — on autopilot.
