Sizes are recommended upload resolutions (platforms downscale, so uploading at these keeps the best quality). Aspect ratio matters most — match it and you'll never get an awkward crop.

How to use our free social media image size guide

  1. Find the platform you're posting to. The cards above cover Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Threads.

  2. Find the placement — feed post, Story or Reel, thumbnail, banner or profile picture. Each row gives the size in pixels and the aspect ratio.

  3. Set your design canvas to that size before you start, or crop your photo to the ratio shown. Getting the ratio right matters more than the exact pixels.

  4. Export at the listed size, or larger in the same ratio, then upload. Platforms scale images down, so a bigger file with the right ratio stays sharp.

Why image size matters for social media growth

When an image doesn't match the shape a platform expects, the app decides how to crop it — and it will happily cut off a face, a price or your logo. A blurry or awkwardly cropped post looks careless, and people scroll straight past.

Most of the work comes down to a few ratios. Vertical 9:16 (1080 × 1920) covers TikTok, Reels, Stories and YouTube Shorts. A 1:1 square (1080 × 1080) suits the Instagram and Threads feeds. X shows 16:9 images (1600 × 900) in the timeline. Pinterest favors tall 2:3 Pins (1000 × 1500). On vertical video, keep text and faces away from the edges, where each app places its buttons and captions.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best Instagram image size?

For the feed, a 1080 × 1080 square (1:1) always works, and a 4:5 portrait takes up more of the screen — the Instagram card above lists the exact pixels. Reels and Stories use 1080 × 1920 (9:16).

What's the YouTube thumbnail size?

1280 × 720 pixels, a 16:9 ratio. Thumbnails often appear small in search and suggestions, so use a few big, bold words and one clear face or object rather than a busy scene.

Is this image size guide free?

Yes. It's a free reference page — no sign-up, nothing to download. Bookmark it and check it whenever you design a post.
