Follower count tells you how many people could see a post. Engagement rate tells you how many cared. It's the fairer number for comparing posts, tracking progress month to month and sizing up an account before you work with it: a big following with almost no likes is a warning sign.
Here's how to calculate engagement rate with an example. 2,000 followers, 80 likes, 12 comments, 4 shares and 4 saves add up to 100 interactions. Divide 100 by 2,000 and multiply by 100, and you get 5% — in the Good range. Comments, shares and saves take more effort than a like, so the posts that earn them are worth studying.

Both are useful. Enter one post's numbers to judge that post. For your account as a whole, add up the likes, comments, shares and saves from your last 10 posts, divide each total by 10, and enter those averages with your follower count.
